Andrew Smith, 6th grader, from Agua Caliente Elementary School won 1st place on the national CCEW Illustrated Poem Contest in the category 6-8 grades sponsored by the American Chemical Society (ACS).
As part of CCEW 2019, students from grades K-12 were invited to share their interpretation of this year's theme, "Take Note: The Chemistry of Paper", in the form of illustrated poems. This year, 34 ACS local sections submitted entries for the contest. Student Andrew Smith participated in the 2019 CCEW Illustrated Poem Contest sponsored by the Southern Arizona American Chemical Society (SAZACS) Local Section. Every year, Dr. Grazyna Zreda, SAZACS Community Activities Chair, organizes this successful contest. This year we received 61 posters from grades 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12. Andrew Smith won 1st place in the category 6-8 grades at the local level, winning a $25 gift card and a certificate of participation. Winners at the local section level qualified for the national contest. At the national level, first and second-place prizes were awarded in four categories.
