Calling All Young Chemistry Enthusiasts!

SAZACS is thrilled to continue a beloved tradition! We invite K-12 students to participate in the 2025 CCEW Illustrated Poem Contest, happening during Chemists Celebrate Earth Week (April 21-27, 2025).

🌊 Theme: "Glaciers" – Hot Topic, Cool Chemistry
This year’s theme celebrates the International Year of Glacier Preservation and highlights glaciers' essential role in building a sustainable future.
🎨 ✍️ Combine the power of science and art to craft an illustrated poem that brings this theme to life!

🔹 Who Can Participate?
Students from Kindergarten through 12th grade are encouraged to enter the contest.

To celebrate 2024 National Chemistry Week (2024 NCW), the Southern Arizona Local Section of the American Chemical Society (SAZACS) is sponsoring an Illustrated poem contest on the theme "Picture Perfect Chemistry" for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Submission deadline is: Friday, 25 October, 2024 by 11:59 PM (ET)

Exciting Opportunity for Female Chemists: Apply for the ACS WCC and Eli Lilly Travel Award!

We are thrilled to announce that the ACS Women Chemists Committee (WCC) and Eli Lilly and Company are sponsoring a program to provide funding for undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral female chemists. This funding will enable them to travel to the  ACS Spring Meeting to present their research findings.

In addition to financial support, the WCC will host a poster session and offer several networking opportunities for the award recipients. These include the Women in the Chemical Enterprise Breakfast, the WCC Luncheon, and a special event sponsored by the ACS Office of the CEO. Through this program, WCC and Eli Lilly and Company aim to increase the participation of women in the chemical sciences.

We are thrilled to announce that Sharon Gardlund, a dedicated member of our Southern Arizona ACS Local Section, has been honored as one of the recipients of the 2023 #ACSVoty award. Sharon exemplifies excellence as both a volunteer and a leader within the Women's Chemistry Group (WCG) of our local section.

The WCG passionately organizes numerous in-person outreach events throughout the year, impacting and engaging with over 1,000 individuals annually. When asked about her fondest moments in chemistry outreach, Sharon enthusiastically shared, "I take immense pleasure in inspiring young women to explore STEM careers and in sharing the wonders of the chemistry behind everyday phenomena."

Dr. Tara Archuleta receives the 2022 High School Chemistry Award from SAZACS

​Dr. Tara Archuleta from TUSD’s University High School won
the 2022 High School Teacher award.

As our award winner, she will receive a check for $500. 

Another $500 will be gifted to University High for her to use to support her teaching.

Her nomination will also be submitted for consideration at the next Rocky Mountain Regional Meeting. Learn more!
